I reckon so, strong rumours last season about him leaving cause they kept selling

He's not a manager to work where his hands are tied or players are being sold from under him.

He knows that fans won't take that into account if expectations are not achieved, and that its impossible to achieve those expectations if he can't keep his team together.

Better to resign now with reputation (largely) intact than soldier on under increasing pressure and eventually get sacked.
