i don't believe that he was on that bench due to his ego

how did he react when McLaren dropped him?

did he throw his toys out of the pram that would suggest he had a massive ego or did he get on with his game and let his ability speak for itself?

perhaps he was there and involved with the team to draw some of the limelight away from the other players? maybe in the hope that it would allow them to concentrate on the games rather than on how they are perceived in the press?

perhaps he was there because the other players like him and having him around could be good for the other player's morale and team-building?

sure, with hindsight it's easy to say that whatever the thinking behind his inclusion it didn't work because England were s**t - but for anyone to suggest they'd have been any better if he wasn't there is laughable.
