There's some wonderful stories from the old days. Tacks spread on the road in front of hated riders; brandies supped for energy, etc. But my favourite is the one about the rider whose front fork broke on a descent so he carried his bike (much heavier then of course), ran down to a blacksmith at the bottom and made a new one. He was the disqualified because he'd received assistance from the smithy who handled the bellows.
