For me, Englands efforts at the last six World Cups come in pairs
1986 and 1990:
Sides not overly blessed with gifted individuals start poorly, playing typically English football then somehow get some momentum and end up playing their best football (and making the nation a little warm inside) in defeat to the eventual champions.
1998 and 2002
Possibly the most talented teams who with a better draw and a bit more luck could and probably would have reached the semis at least and who were remembered for outstanding battles with Argentina.
2006 and 2010
Utterly incoherent performances throughout, accompanied by a 'we will improve' motif after every abject performance, from a squad of overhyped and frankly uninterested arseholes epitomised by the truly pointless Frank Lampard. Go f**k yourselves.
