I saw those many reports of dropping reception when being held in a particular way; but it's not universal apparently and one report suggested that some had escaped into the wild without a protective coating on the rim/ariel.
As for iOS4, I upgraded my iPod Touch without doing any hocus pocus - the automated install procedure does a back up & resets to factory settings anyway. Only issue was that photos were somehow restored in a really low res; but I unsynced them and resynced and they are fine now.
