People speak a lot of s**t about the Germans. Of course they have their share of t**ts as does anywhere, but they have a tradition of openness and democracy which is the equal of anywhere and once you get to know their idiosyncrasies it's a lovely country.
For football you should try to get down to watch St Pauli in Hamburg while they're in the 1. Bundesliga.
