but being captain of a football team is solely a PR position

it has no influence whatsoever on what happens on the pitch.

On-field leaders lead, whether they are captain or not. And those who aren't don't, even if you make them captain.
Our 2003/4 promotion team was a great example - Drury was the captain but had no apparent on-field leadership qualities whatsoever - the on-field leader was Malky (and Iwan when he played), and making him captain would not have made him any more so.

The captaincy is just a 'representative' role for PR stuff, so having someone like Terry as captain should never have been considered in the first place (the idea that in merely playing for England he is somehow representing me is grim enough in the first place, without making him somwhow MORE representative).
