Fillums: Jindabyne, BBC2 tonight
We had this at my film club last year: when I read the schedule at the start of the season, it was the film I was most looking forward to, having read the write-ups. However I found it disappointing, so, as you're going to be watching the football anyway, I'm basically advising you not to set the video for it, so to speak.
It's like this: Jindabyne is a sleepy town in Australia. Three blokes, including Aussie Gabriel Byrne, have been looking forward to their annual fishing trip in the Outback. So the weekend comes and they drive a few hours, park up and then walk for a few hours more over rough terrain until they reach their favourite spot - to find the recently-deceased corpse of a murdered Aboriginal girl floating in the shallows of the river.
Having no available 'phone signal, and weighing up the length of the walk back and the hassle of the police investigation, they opt to have their weekend fishing and report the find on the way back, saying they found the body on the last day. I'm not giving anything away when I tell you this: this is the first twenty minutes of the movie.
What happens after that, I won't say, apart from that they (obviously) don't get away with it. There are recriminations, from family, police and the local Aborigines. It ought to have been an intriguing character movie and you may find it to be so: me, maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind, but to me it felt like a 2-hour Eastenders episode, set in amazing scenery.
