The play-offs were only introduced as part of a reduction in size of the top flight.

It involved sides 3, 4 and 5 from the old second div and the 19th team in old div 1.

In the second season ('88, while the finals were still two legs), Middlesbrough won promotion to the top flight at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea were relegated.

Fucking brilliant. Now THAT is a play-off.

Anyway, the FL loved it so much they thought they'd carry on with them just for the f**k of it.
