This irks me greatly as well, I hear it around me. From people who then

celebrate when he scores. I feel like asking them why the are celebrating if he's so useless.

Also I firmly believe he is told to hold a central position. The Horse seems unable to keep himself down the middle. This is fine, it helps to have a striker moving around but you need to know at least one of your front 2 will be in the box when a ball goes in.
When Holt was out Martin popped up in more areas, which is key for me.

Also, in that little 'difficult' spell we had there were many times Holt, Martin and Wes were involved in pretty triangles out on the wing that got us nowhere.

I agree he could do with chasing 'lost causes' a little more a times, but he is certainly not lazy.
