Let me explain
It's in our national psyche. During WW2 the national media was directed to make fun of the Germans and did so extremely well using humour as a weapon (It's That Man Again was a classic example). The government of the day ensured that the enemy was lampooned at every occasion and this trend continued long after the war had ended. Dad's Army, Allo Allo and even the classic "Don't mention the War" sketch in Flowery Twats saw John Cleese masterfully tap into this British hang up with WW2. In these enlightened politically correct times I doubt very much though if we will see the modern day equivalent if 30 years time doing a "Don't mention the suicide bombing Islamic fundamentallists" sketch.
