I don't think Saddam did 'need' to be stopped

he was no worse than plenty of other leaders that have the full and open or tacit backing of the west.
Let's not forget that he didn't need any stopping when he was considered an ally and received a hell of a lot of funding for the war with Iran.

I personally think the Iraq war was merely hatched as an excuse to give the US and Uk a firm foothold in the Middle East from where they can destabilise and eventually control the rest of what is a very important geopolitical region.
If it hadn't been Iraq, it would've just been somewhere else that was demonised
