PS3 is a bit weird like that,
I wanted to connect my PS3 to my 27" iMac. I can do it via the HDMI-DVI as the DVI port is both input and output (only on the 27" model for whatever reason? It doesn't work like that on the 21" version?). I did it but you only get a smaller picture that doesn't fill the screen. You need an upscaler which is not out yet but will be in 2 weeks. Technology is wared sometimes.
