These make it plausible

"utility player", "suitable addition to the squad" (as opposed to quality replacement for aging CB) and "31 year old". I'm betting he's no taller than 5'8' either ...

I'm sure it's hard to find the right kind of player who's willing to come here with transfer deadline day fast approaching, but that would really have been scraping the barrel.
