are emulators legal now?

(the only other advantage of buying the games all over again to use on my Wii is that it leaves my laptop free for Mrs Scrampton to do some internet Sainsbury shopping type tasks on and i can use a controller rather than Q-A-O-P Space Bar like what was in the old days of the Speccy)
