It will work without the battery

If it doesn't you have a bigger problem

If it works with a battery, then either the power pack you're using is wrong, or the connector on the laptop, for the power pack, is broken

Buying parts or updating old laptops can be costly. In a lot of cases with modern prices. You're better off not bothering unless you can get it done cheaply
