I believe it possibly stemmed from...

...stupid people (no deliberate reference to your ex btw) getting confused about whether to count the day they were on and/or the actual day they were counting down to or not, and for them counting the nights was clearer for some reason.

I hate it when people count down to things in general, like the time inbetween can't be focused on anything else. Plus arseholes that do it at work 15 minutes into your shift at 6am, saying only 12 hours to go; they'd get a f**king slap too.
