Yep, what you said is spot on,
The reverse wiring would certainly heat things up. I'm surprised but I seem to remember you saying before that the wiring was old. Someone may have previously replaced the socket and wired back it wrong. As long as you did it according to the diagram on the new socket then it's fine. I'm surprised it didnt blow the fuse off!
