the fact is that there are elements on both sides that have enormous amounts of power and money to gain by furthering their viewpoint of events.
The problem is the way in which the views of powerful members of the scientific community are foisted onto the public in general as being fact. This makes it significantly harder to swim against the tide and dissent from these mainstream views. From the little I've seen so far, it looks the CRU have been encouraging this. A read of the actual mails is required of course.
I'm not sure which "side" is correct, as it's impossible to prove or disprove one or the other as yet. Jumping to flawed conclusions could be even more damaging than awaiting harder evidence
