I tend to think that if the characters were different

ie it had been England 'cheated' not Ireland, there wouldn't have been huge outpourings of sympathy from the Emerald Isle.

Also tend to think that if it had been any country other than France, which still seems to be the most-loathed nation by the english, then the english wouldn't be showing as much sympathy either.

In the grand scheme of things I don't think it matters too much. Thierry Henry's salary, and probably even Robbie Keane's would fund a fair amount of liver cancer drugs.
