The most ironic thing about all this is the Polish government's response

The day before Polanski was arrested, the Polish prime minister announced there would be a vote on whether to introduce chemical castration for convicted sex offenders. There is cross-party consensus on the need such a stiff penalty, though incidentally it would be the first country in Europe and one of very few in the whole world to adopt such a punishment. Fair to say that it would be a 'hard line approach'.

The next day, Polanski is detained in Switzerland and the foreign minister's says give the guy a break, he's already suffered by not being able to pick up his oscar in person. Although of course under the newly proposed legislation in Poland, Polanski would be pumped full of oestrogen.
