The internet is free on O2 contract, you can also use wireless access points (The Cloud), or private networks, so long as you have the pass key. The 3G coverage is OK, but I generally just use wireless as I have it at work, home and most of my friend's places.
Apps are often free, but many cost money. This can be 60p, or so, up to ?50+ (Tomtom app is expensive)
