usually ask for at least a C to do AS Level so that shouldn't be a problem. I'd say do the subjects you enjoy. He may well have only been a couple of marks away from getting a B afterall. No point putting yourself through an A Level you don't like. Just because you got a high grade at GCSE does not mean you will at A Level too. I got 1 grade A at GCSE so naturally thought I'd do that at A Level too but ended up failing miserably at it. I also started one subject from scratch that I'd never studied before and did really well at it.
I guess he wants to go to uni, so my advice would be to do the subject he wants to do at uni and any others he enjoys. As long as he's got C or above in maths and English it will all work out ok. :o)
