If we were to win the next 2 games 1-0 we would be better off than if (say) we had had a 5-0 win, a 1-0 defeat and a 0-0 draw, even though the latter scenario would include one great win and no embarrassing humilations.

You judge a team by how many games it wins compared to losses, not how good or bad those losses are. The 92/3 team let in more goals than it scored, thrashed pretty much no-one while getting embarrassed a few times. But overall they won more games than they lost so they are heroes . We have had 1 game this season and have 45 to go - plenty of time to determine if this is a decent team or not.
