I think it's mostly the 'trade' stuff

I've found some really interesting people and their blogs through it - I quite like people like Andrew Mcafee from Harvard - and doubt that I would have ever checked their stuff out on a regular basis through normal channels. Suppose it's like a quick tv guide!
