It was bugging me so much I've been reading the rules and this is how it goes:

.....you can score directly from a goal kick but only in the oponents goal.....

.....if the ball is not kicked directly out of the penalty area the kick is retaken........

......in the event of any other infringement of this law the kick is retaken.....

So in conclusion the kick is retaken no matter whether the ball left the area or not.
