I gave up on a New Years Day too.

I had about 10 L&B left at 23:30 on New Year's Eve, so I chain-smoked them before midnight, to ensure that I wouldn't wake up with just a couple of fags left and think "Oh, it's only one, shame to throw it away."

Had a throat like a tramp for a day, and felt sick as a dog. Haven't looked back since :)
