I admit to a degree of mystification

the Newcastle fans wailing and gnashing their teeth are the ones who wanted him sacked a few years ago, and the journalists weeping crocodile tears are mostly the same ones who hounded him out of the England job a few years ago.

Personally I never rated him very much so I'm not much bothered. I doubt there'll be all this hoo-hah when Venables croaks.
