Many people won't.
If you are interested in where they went and what they did, there is a huge amount of information available these days - web, books, and especially the National Archive.
I am just finishing the third quarter of a project on a WW2 unit (250 pages so far!), but I have also picked up a variety of information on soldiers going back as far as 1816.
Just a word of warning - make sure you have plenty of spare time as once you start it tends to be quite abosrbing!
