Norwich City 1 - 0 St Johnstone
We win again...
Let's start with the plus points. Adeyami was great. OK, it's preseason and the opposition didn't look great, but he controlled the midfield, making his own space, winning the ball, bringing it forward, passing accurately. The perfect holding midfielder. He was joined in the middle of a sort of 4-3-3 by Hoolahan who caused plenty of problems with his running, on balance I would say more for St Johnstone than for Norwich, and a ruddy faced McVeigh, who was OK and shouted a feckin lot.
We still don't look full of goals. MacDonald went off (not sure why) after about 15 minutes to be replaced by Maric who was the best of the three strikers, looking sharper than against Raith. Bridges just didn't look with it, holding his head like a man who knows his body has let him down. Martin was on the left of the three, as much midfielder as attacker and had a quiet game, without looking awful. Craig came on for Bridges but didn't see much of the game.
At the back Rudd was solid, Semi and Doc kept making little mistakes and the new chap stood in the right places. Lappin looked sharp. After one mistake too many Semi was replaced by Dumic who looked very inexperienced and, I fear, not sharp enough by a fraction of a second.
The goal was from our best move of the match, Adeyami picking up the ball in front of the back four, bringing it forward and making the simple pass to Wes in space. Wes breezed past one player then dinked it over the top to Maric who had beaten the offside trap and calmly placed the ball past the keeper into the bottom left of the goal. Maric looks a bit journeyman, but at the moment he's the only player we've got to be strong in the middle. If he can take chances he might just do.
I'm quite pleased to note that the team has been encouraged to occasionally swap positions, though when McVeigh went to the holding position St Johnstone had the game for twenty minutes.
Both teams look like they were going to struggle for goal, but although positionally St Johnstone might have edged it, Norwich should be the happier of the two teams.
