so he may have to help pace him up a mountain and get him to the finish, rather than what most of the Astana team will do for Contador or Armstrong, ie ride themselves to a standstill at the front of the bunch

if he can stay ahead of Vande Velde the team could end up throwing their weight behind him instead... though i think that is far less likely...
