L'esprit d'escalier is 'the wit of the staircase' - ie the smart remark that you think of only on your way down the stairs. It comes to you too late, you think of it only after the time you should have made it. The staircase describes the moment when the joke comes to you - which is always some time AFTER it should have been made. This is, it is in the FUTURE.

'Gobbleaar' was so late that it was made the NEXT DAY after it should have been made. So it didn't even come to you on the staircase - it came to you the NEXT DAY.

I exaggerated this delay to suggest that you only thought of it the "next week".
