Geek help wanted

I think this may be a hardware problem but I'm not sure how to deal with it.

I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop, but recently changed broadband supplier from BT to Sky. Not long afterwards the WiFi stopped working, despite the switch on the front of the computer still being in the 'on' position. The light is also off. Switching on and off makes no difference, but when turning the computer on the light is there, but it goes off once the software has booted up.

Shall I set it on fire and take it back to the shop?
