I am somewhat surprised by
the number of posters who still seem to think we will stay up. I, like all of us, HOPE we do, but the cold facts suggest very strongly that we will not, and we could even finish bottom. Why people think we can win six of the remaining games when we have won only eight all season I can only put down to emotionally distorted optimism.
There has been quite a lot of commonsense on here today and, despite our plight, very few posters are really saying 'I told you so'
I was a vociferous campaigner for the removal of the last three managers. Worthington was allowed to go on far too long after finding himself out of his depth in the big league. Grant was a disaster. Roeder, true to form, started well then allowed his rather unpleasant personality to dominate his decision making.
I called for change because I thought a good manager was around the next corner. I hoped for Tilson. I hoped for O'Driscoll when Worthington went. Then I hoped for Ince, Curbishley, Jewell, Boothroyd or Robins.
I now realise that none of the above was ever going to take the job. Grant took it because he wanted a crack at management. Massive mistake by the Board but I guess they just hoped they might get lucky. Roeder took it because he was desperate to get back in to the game and the Board were without a clue. Gunn took it, I think, because he loves the club (he allowed emotion and family to carry him away after the Barnsley game) but it was probably the least sensible thing he has ever done.
Why do I think all this? Because the 'proper managers' whose names I have mentioned probably had their interviews, made enquiries about the money available, assessed the football nous of the Board and beat a hasty retreat. They knew what we are now seeing ..that we were going down. No good manager wants that on his CV if he can avoid it.
I stiil bemoan the appalling sequence of expensive and, frankly, inexcusable loans - even last season we had Murray, Hartson etc but then to have Archibald-Henville, Koroma etc and now the latest batch of no-hopers - Killen, Gow and Leijer - who can't even get a game- just speaks of clueless management which has now gone on for several years. How can you possibly agree to sign a player and pay him (and his agent) a lot of money which you cannot afford when he isn't even any better than what you've got?
Seriously..I wonder how many goals Chris Martin would have scored if he had been playing all season.
Now I don't know enough about business structure to really say what makes a football club different from other companies but surely if the aim of a massive organistaion with a (relatively) huge turnover and about 20,000 customers spending hundreds of pounds with the company each year, not to mention thousands of others paying money in every other week
is to produce a product which satisfies said customers and the company seriously fails then surely the Chieef Executive should resign or be removed. He has failed in his job and does not deserve his salary.
