Another belated response, to the thread I started last night

(I'd love to be a perma-WotBer but real life keeps intruding).

How can the Chairman predict how his choice of manager will turn out? Well, obviously no-one can be certain. For any employer, choice of staff is a gamble, but the more senior the appointment, the more due diligence is required in terms of head-hunting, drawing up a short-list, background investigation, in-depth interviewing etc. And when you've made a choice, you are obliged to offer all possible support. For example, I defended Worthington at the end, not because I thught he was the right man for the job - I never thought he was the right man for the job, even back when he got us to the play-off finals - but because those who run the Club should have seen the obvious weaknesses - lack of a worthwhile scouting network, shortage of modern coaching skills, poor academy etc. - and addressed them before it got to the point that Worthy was literally hounded out by the fans. And at that point, the Board caved in and threw him to the dogs. Which is what they did to Roeder as well.

I'm not saying that Roeder should still be in the job, in fact I'm not saying he should ever have been appointed. The thing is, I knew very little about the man before he came here. Unfortunately, the Board seemingly knew as little as me. In just the same way as a manager pays for the decisions he makes about buying players (and that's what did for Worthy ultimately), those who appoint him should pay for their choice.

I realise we're in the age when the Chairman of the ECB and the head of the FIA can shrug off any responsibility for anything, but hopefully Roger Munby isn't Giles Clarke or Old Spanky and will do the decent thing if we go down. If we go under, presumably he'll have to go.
