For me though, if both feet are off the floor, and the leading leg is more than 3/4 inches off its a red.
Playing the ball or not doesn't matter.

Once you've launched you then have no control what so ever on your momentum. So if you miss the ball the clatter the players shin/knee/thing over/after the ball and risk doing serious injury.

There is no place in the game for a tackle like that, its dangerous and unnecessary. If you can't win it in a controlled manner, stay on your feet.
