Van Nistelrooy's "goal" yesterday
From today's telegraph,
"The chairman of Austria's refereeing commission, Gerhard Kapl, insisted that Holland's first goal was legal as Ruud van Nistelrooy was played onside by the injured Christian Panucci, who was lying behind the goal-line. Kapl argued that the Swedish linesman, Stefan Wittberg, was "100 per cent correct, without any doubt" as article 11.4.1. of the refereeing code stipulated that "an opposing player cannot be offside when one of the last two defenders has left the field of play".
Panucci had not left the field intentionally, as he was injured, so Donadoni was entitled to be aggrieved. "I didn't see how Panucci ended up outside the pitch," said the Italian coach. "I don't want to focus on the first goal being offside. It happened"
