The Ched Evans song - a definitive statement
It is obvious that we need a Ched song and obvious that it has to be a version of Bread of Heaven. There has been a distressing lack of consistency on the exact wording to be used and a distressing inability on the part of many people to produce something that scans and is otherwise suitable. I am therefore going to set out the definitive version, with notes explaining why this is the only acceptable version and why anyone singing anything else will be shot.
You have to start with the original words, which are:
"Bread of Heaven
Bread of Heaven
Feed me till I want no more
Feed me til I want no more"
"Bread of Heaven" is a godsend for our purposes, since we have a double rhyme with Ched Evans. So minimal changes needed here.
I have seen suggested "Ched of Heaven", "Ched from Heaven" and "Ched of Evans". All ok, but inadequate. It is essential to use "Evans", so that rules out the "heaven" variants. "Ched of Evans" is better but a little clumsy.
The right first line is inevitably "Chedwyn Evans". Scans well, full name, lovely euphony, even selwyn can remember it. Sorted.
Now, with "more" as the last line of the original, it is obvious that the terrace version must end in "score". No, it must. Stop arguing.
It would be a nice touch to keep "feed" in there, little play on words, ooo suits you sir.
So the other line must be "Feed the Ched and he will score". Again, good scansion, good euphony, simple. I like "the Ched", as well, that's a feelgood factor for the player himself. And of course it pays subtle homage to the Man City "Feed the Yak" chant for Yakubu.
So in full
"Chedwyn Evans
Chedwyn Evans
Feed the Ched and he will score
Feed the Ched and he will score"
That's definitive now. Dissidents will be punished.
It would be possible to construct a verse for this chorus. The original verse starts "Guide me O thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land". "Jehovah" has a nice fit with "Roeder" and so one could start with "Guide us O thou great Glenn Roeder", but I think this is all getting too complicated. It fails the "will selwyn be able to sing this?" test, basically.
Carry on, now.
