FAO Megson: Why the negativity?
It's not negativity, but given the build-up that Mr Walpole has given his scheme on here, is it not legitimate to ask questions about it here? And when the answers to very basic questions are not given then how is it possible to be positive about it? At the very least that suggests that little or no thought has
been given to the scheme - which is no basis to assume that it will ever get off
the ground, let alone be successful.
On a personal level I hope he succeeds: I have not the slightest intention of donating moneys to a PLC with an annual turnover in excess of £23 million - for all their generosity that is not something that even the majority shareholders have done.So I'm in a no-lose situation - probably:it concerns me that this may impact on the other ways that supporters can, if they wish, donate money to the football club.In particular I don't accept that NCISA, and particularly FONCY have a low profile. It seems to me that the reason they don't raise bucketloads of money for the club is clear: people simply don't want to just give their money to NCFC.
Which brings me to another thing: will this be an efficient way of donating money to the club? Mr Walpole has declined to say what he thinks the expenses of
his organisation might be. And when pressed on the tax status he claimed that it would be a "charitable trust". I hope I'm wrong - but at best that seems to be
incorrect, at worst deceptive. Either way that seems to me to be a powerful argument for donating via FONCY, or NCISA, or anyone but Mr Walpole.
In general terms I disagree anyway with the idea of funding transfers, again it seems to me that FONCY has a more noble aim. Craig Bellamy recently visited Kit
Carson and spoke to the youngsters at Histon:the sorts of things that FONCY help fund - foreign tours and the like - were experiences that they and he shared. At
the very least moneys given to FONCY give young people in Norfolk the sort of experiences that they would not otherwise have.
So it would astonish me if 90%, or 70% of supporters sign up to the scheme. But if they do no doubt they will want to be assured of the bona-fides of the scheme
- something, of course, that cannot be ascertained at the moment. My personal view, though, is that if (and I don't think this is the case) there are thousands of people wishing to donate to the club moneys to be used to fund the first team then we should lobby the club for another share issue. And if Mr Walpole wants to head up such a campaign then I'll back him to the hilt.
