well, it could be partly true, in that

he doesn't want to reduce his income by having to pay a moderator, and it makes much more sense (to him) for the reader to pay it. Oh, and add a little cut in there for Rick as well.

Personally I think he should focus on the writers - make them pay to showcase their talents rather than have to go the long way through journalism courses, apprenticeships, etc. There are so many egos the size of my penis around these days* that plenty will be so convinced of their genius that they'll be happy to pay.

However, the circulation (readers) is the key, so don't charge them ! The model I describe is very similar to the first free newspapers by the way. Nobody ever actually read the Mercury or the Advertiser, but because of the virtual circulation, they made all their money on advertising and people were over the moon if their article, letter or photo was in the paper. Even though the only people who actually noticed were the ones they had pointed it out to.

I mean, look at how easy it is to con 35 quid out of a bloke who uses the moniker "commonsense" !
