Gentlemen's trousers: a guide for the sartorially confused

This is actually fairly simple so pay attention. Yes, I'm talking to you, Bay. Sit up and take notes.

1 October to 31 March. Daywear (informal): corduroys, moleskins. Daywear (formal): cavalry twills, grey flannels. Evening wear (if not evening dress): as above BUT chinos are acceptable IF your host or your wife makes the house too hot.

1 April to 30 September. Daywear (informal): chinos in bright colours. Daywear (formal): chinos in subdued or neutral colours. Evening wear (if not in evening dress): as above.

That's it, it's very simple. There is some flexibility in the dates given the uncertainties of climate. Jeans are not acceptable except for gardening. No, there is no such thing as smart jeans.

Bay - write this out 100 times and leave it on my desk in the morning.
