I suggested yesterday that the whole affair was about taking the piss out of Burnley. USA said that was nonsense... which was reassuring.

Scenario:
Burnley enquire about Lambert
McNally tells them to do one
Burnley take umbrage
Burnley announce formal approach
McNally and Lambert take umbrage
McNally writes mischievous statement that suggests 'a fight'
Lambert and McNally hatch press conference plan - say nothing, let others read things in to it (inc Burnley)
Lambert fires the 'f**k off' bullet
McNally applies the 'small club' coup degrace
