like work in progress, IMVHO

The midfield as it stands should get a lot better, as it looked after one outing: it's all there and if Fox can be more robust and Surman more involved we may have something quite handy, though I'd still expect them to get steamrollered once or twice in the season. I'll be interested to see Wezzer as we go on, as he seemed to be falling back into the thing where he beats his man with a trick and then runs into the back of him.

i wasn't too taken with Simeon until his lovely backheel for the goal: he may have been too keen to impress, bursting off on runs without first looking to see where he ought to be running to. Chrissy'll be fine, though he didn't seem to have any understanding with Jackson yet.

Ward and Nelson, ummm. We'll see. We could do with a couple of confidence-boosting games and then they may be OK, but if we don't get 'em then changes must be made, and not too late - I'm a little disheartened by Nelson being made skipper as that might make him more difficult to drop.

The keeper, honestly, terrifies me, but let's give him a couple more games. But omigod he looks lumpen and one flapped clearance was for me more telling than his slow fall for the goals. We'll see, and I suspect we may well see Declan before October.

Overall, we kept the ball quite a lot without looking like we were going to do much with it, but there were encouraging signs. I do think that the potential for good outweighs the potential for disaster. Midtable, I reckon.
