If you want to be a bit more creative and have a bit of fun then I'd highly recomend trying Fruityloops User Posted Link . They do lots of different packages and is easy to pick up. You can do great things once you get to grips with it. Online support is fantastic too.

Protools, Cubase and Logic are primarily for recording, mixing and mastering audio and MIDI. They're all pretty similar, but Protools tends to be the industry standard these days.
If you've got an M-Audio soundcard then you can get Protools M-powered which is a much cheaper alternative. You'll need to have a good processor and a spare dedicated internal hard drive though. It's a bit tricky to set up but once you get to grips with it you can do marvellous stuff.
You'll still need decent hardware (mixers, speakers pre-amps, mics) to run along side it though to get the best of it and the costs soon mount up.
