8 Tbsp regular tomater ketchup
330ml can diet cola
Whatever herbs, spices and seasonings you fancy.

Seriously, diet coke.

Whack the ketchup and the coke together in a pan, and cook over a moderate heat until it thickens. Ought to take about 20 - 25 mins.

I add chili, thyme (quite a lot, and fresh, not dried), worcestercestercestercestercestershire sauce* (just a splash) and salt and pepper. But you can whack what you like in, really.

Sounds improbable, I know, but that s**t is the business. Really.
